Uses of Digital Forensics

When companies are suspicious that employees may be performing an illegal activity on their computers, or doing some other activity that is against company policy, it can be difficult to approach the situation. The same goes for individuals who suspect others are wronging them through digital means. If not handled in a completely legal and ethical manner, investigating another person can be very hazardous. Not only do you put yourself at risk of breaking the law, but also of embarrassing an employee or unfairly accusing them. In every case where you suspect inappropriate digital conduct from someone, it is of utmost importance that you use strategies that are both effective and legal.

Digital forensics provides one of the best routes for your company or person to take when investigating someone for digital misconduct. Simply put, digital forensics is a branch of forensic science pertaining to evidence found in computers, mobile phones, smartphones, digital storage media, cloud services and social media. Ideally, digital forensics aims to examine evidence in a forensically sound manner with the intent of identifying, preserving, extracting, recovering and presenting facts and opinions about the information. In the past, this practice was known as computer forensics, but the digital forensics label has proven more appropriate to the more modern and broad atmosphere of computer/Internet networks. However, some people use the terms interchangeably; morphing the term computer forensics to be inclusive of all things digital.

The scientific procedures associated with digital forensics bring a high standard of integrity and repeatability. By using the proper authority/licensing, fully documenting the Chain of Custody of evidence, and using tool validation methods to ensure actions have been properly vetted, digital forensics ensures valid results. With the information uncovered, a client can methodically analyze any evidence to prepare it for presentation to the court systems or individuals. How you go about this part of the process ultimately depends on how you intend to use the evidence uncovered by the digital forensic team you hired to perform the digital forensics tasks.

  1. As far as I know, having experience is the most important part of selecting any business. I agree completely with your statement about only relying on a digital forensics with licenses and experience. My cousin might like this since she was looking into something similar.
